The organization was established in 2000, following Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999. It was founded to strengthen citizens’ understanding of democratic values, civic responsibilities, and active participation in governance at a time when Nigeria was transitioning to democratic rule. From its inception, the organization sought to empower citizens through civic education, public awareness, and democratic engagement, based on the conviction that informed and active citizens are fundamental to building accountable institutions and sustainable development.
