A Second Chance at Education
For one parent, providing consistent access to education for the children was a growing challenge. With the family facing financial hardship and the father without employment, the cost of education had become difficult to meet. As a result, the children missed valuable opportunities to remain in formal schooling and continue their learning.
Through the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP), the children were enrolled in an alternative learning pathway that is helping them reconnect with education and recover learning they had missed.
Today, they are actively participating in the programme, strengthening their knowledge and developing essential skills that can support their continued educational journey. Two of the girls have also benefited from support to sit for their senior secondary school examinations, giving them an important opportunity to progress towards further education.
“Before ABEP, we were worried about how the children would continue their education because of our financial situation. The programme has given them another opportunity to learn, catch up, and look forward to a better future.”

For the family, ABEP represents more than access to education. It is helping remove financial barriers, restore hope, and create pathways for children who might otherwise remain excluded from learning opportunities.
Why this matters
Stories like this demonstrate the importance of investing in inclusive and accessible education. By supporting children who have missed out on formal schooling, ABEP is helping learners rebuild foundational knowledge, access examination opportunities, and strengthen their prospects for continued education.
With sustained support from partners and donors, programmes like ABEP can continue reaching vulnerable learners and ensuring that financial hardship does not permanently determine a child’s educational future.
