From Community Action to Lasting Impact
Since 8 March 2022, the project has invested in locally led approaches that strengthen peace, community security, youth leadership, women’s participation and resilience across targeted communities in Kano State.
Key results from the project
Communities are taking greater responsibility for preventing violent extremism
The project has contributed to a positive shift in public attitudes and behaviour towards preventing violent extremism. Communities are increasingly recognizing that prevention is a shared responsibility, rather than an issue for government alone.
Women and youth are gaining greater awareness of economic opportunities
Sensitization and awareness activities on cooperatives, livelihoods and economic empowerment have supported women and youth to explore opportunities that can strengthen their economic resilience.
Community-based security structures have been strengthened
Security vigilante structures were established across various communities to strengthen local security mechanisms and support community-level prevention and response.
Community Action Response Teams are strengthening early warning
Community Action Response Teams (CARTs) were established across 12 communities in 6 Local Government Areas. The teams serve as community watch structures that strengthen early warning, referrals and coordination around security concerns.
An ongoing process is linking CARTs with the Police Community Public Relations Committee (PCRC) in Kano State to strengthen collaboration between communities and security institutions.
Local Conflict Management Alliances are connecting stakeholders
Local Conflict Management Alliances (LOCMAs) were established in Nassarawa, Gwale, Gwarzo, Bichi, Bebeji and Tudun Wada.
These alliances provide platforms for coordinating multisectoral plans, decisions and responses to emerging security and conflict issues at the local government level.
More than 3,000 young people mobilized as peace champions
More than 3,000 youth were mobilized and trained through youth summits and peace fiestas. They were engaged to campaign against drug abuse, youth restiveness and other social vices while promoting peaceful communities.
Strengthening women’s participation in peace and security
Capacity-building training was provided for the Kano State Women, Peace and Security Network to strengthen women’s participation and contribution to peace and security processes.
Peace Clubs established across 24 schools
The project supported the Kano State Ministry of Education in establishing Peace Clubs across 24 schools in 12 communities, creating platforms for young people to engage with peacebuilding and positive relationships.
Local mentorship structures are supporting livelihood beneficiaries
Steering committees were established to mentor livelihood beneficiaries within their communities, creating local support structures to strengthen continued engagement and sustainability.
120 youth equipped with computer literacy skills
The project trained 120 youth in computer literacy to strengthen digital competencies and promote access to entrepreneurship and digital skills opportunities.
